Building Information Modeling (BIM) as a risk management tool for mechanical design consultants

Architects have been using the geometric aspects of BIM for years, resulting in a new and more complex generation of built shapes. However, with the growth of data volumes, shipping costs are also dropping due to BIM.

Contractors use 4D (time) technology to link their construction schedules to the BIM model of the design team, allowing them to test different construction strategies, reducing on-site risks and optimizing delivery. Cost risk is also managed, allowing business teams to more effectively link the design model using 5D techniques that plug into predefined patterns that are fed into historical cost databases. While these initiatives are driving innovation today, the next generation of BIM tools will focus on new ways to apply geometry and data from the design models themselves, with risk management tools as catalysts for the delivery model.

Autodesk ( https://www.autodesk.co.uk/bim-360/ ) and Trimble recently signed an operating agreement that highlights the importance that software vendors place on the most effective ways to combine design and project management. The development of new custom design systems that tie geometry and data together and allow "real-time" and analytic interaction between members of the development team is becoming more common, for example:

  1. Use design-by-cost dashboards that provide architects with real-time cost data and instantly assess and refine the impact of design decisions.
  2.  Enabling early exploration of innovative construction approaches such as flying factories and modular construction to drasticallyreduce assembly and build times while improving health and safety, cost and sustainability.
  3. The use of 3D tools as part of new coordination and design management processes, accelerating the iterative design process.

Immersion technology is revolutionizing the way various mechanical design consultants are designing , offering more efficient ways to inform clients about design development and eliminate designer meetings and presentations at a two-dimensional conference table. Meetings can be held in design models with participants and their avatarswho come together from anywhere in the world to discuss design issues in vastly different ways, moving from 2D information to modern 3D environments.
